Boston quintet Big Bear are jigsaw alchemists reconstructing, recontextualizing and reinventing; making joyful noise out of ideas that sound familiar, but feel disorienting, uneasy, exciting and alive. Big Bear began in the early 2000's, first releasing their self-titled debut in 2005 on Monitor Records (home to Oxes, among others), and secondly a split with Child Bite on Joyful Noise in 2009.
In the fall of 2010 Big Bear sadly decided to call it quits. What was even more sad was the fact that they did so with two completed amazing albums left unreleased (Under The Beach, See Out). Well, we decided it was too grave of a sin to let these albums go unheard, and as of December 2010 JNR decided to release both simultaneously and digitally.
Big Bear subvert the ideas of traditional melody and harmony, using vocals as a rhythm instrument and epileptic dual-guitar labyrinths as a snaky logic puzzle. The melodic angles read like a conversation and the lyrics read like the musings of a cynical idealist attempting to re-configure the world with a mix of pessimism and affection.
