Description

"Gang Banged With A Headache, And Live" is a recently-unsurfaced "authorized bootleg" from math rock pioneers Don Caballero. Recorded in 2003 at a single show in Chicago, "Gang Banged" captures Don Cab's unrivaled musicianship in gritty, brash fashion.

Featuring the lineup of Gene Doyle, Jeff Ellsworth, Jason Jouver, and (of course) Damon Che, the band performs material spanning from 1993's "For Respect" (Touch & Go) to songs that would end up on 2006's "World Class Listening Problem" (Relapse Records). While classics like "Fire Back About Your New Baby's Sex" and "Delivering The Groceries at 138 Beats Per Minute" are performed true to their recordings, the band also explores medley territory at times, weaving together songs like "Let's Face It Pal, You Didn't Need That Eye Surgery" and "You Haven't Lived Afro Pop" into the aptly named "Let's Face It Pal, You Haven't Lived Afro Pop".

"Gang Banged" includes a decade's worth of quintessential Don Cab material, rendered one fateful night in Chicago. But let's be clear: this is not a premeditated live recording nor a "best of" album. This is a found document which affirms our humble opinion that Don Cab is simply one of the best bands that has ever existed.

Press

"A taut, perfectly skewed mesh of interlocking parts, flushed out with a vigor that bucks the band's lab-coated reputation... It makes you wish you’d been there, lost in the spindly guitar patterns, second-guessing anomalous time changes, caught beneath the thunderbolt drums." -- PITCHFORK

"Founding member Damon "Che" Fitzgerald... managed to pull off one of the band's most impressive sets, driving the show with his unmistakable rhythms and energy, able to impress listeners back in 2003 and those just now picking up Gang Banged With a Headache, and Live." -- CMJ

"Their Touch & Go work, especially For Respect and What Burns Never Returns, is some of the most labyrinthine, powerful rock music made in the last 20 years, and with Che's powerful drumming and the band's knack for simultaneously turning on a dime and sounding remarkably cohesive, they're a band that's likely to only grow its legend as time passes and more people catch on to what they were doing." -- POPMATTERS

"... bouncing around time signatures midst a whirlwind of double-tapping guitars, occasionally shifting from herky-jerky no-wave into full-on propulsive metal. From there, the band ferociously tears into their material, weaving between the old and new, sometimes within the same song." -- STEREO SUBVERSION

"A single-set live recording from back in '03... [that] showcases Che's relentless, twisting rock beats, but it also gives a live perspective of the polyrhythmic guitar work and deep bass tones that are so crucial to the band." -- ALARM

"[An] incredibly brilliant, incredibly noise instrumental math rock band." -- SURVIVING THE GOLDEN AGE

"A live set recorded in Chicago in 2003, Gang Banged With a Headache, and Live doesn't mark an anniversary, or a special event of any kind, in the life of long-running instro band Don Caballero. It's just a damn good show that happened to be recorded and is finally seeing release." -- BLURT

"The recordings... remain true to the band's punk ethos and are a testament to their energetic and inspired live shows" -- ATLAS AND THE ANCHOR

"Don Cab is avant-garde, wildly eclectic, but still stunningly rhythmical and occasionally a bit punk rock." -- HIPLANTA
