Jad Fair at Joyful Noise
This month, Joyful Noise was fortunate enough to host a stage and gallery space for the soft spoken, spastic, freak strummin’ styling of Jad Fair. Presenting the audience with only himself and a hand painted electric guitar, Jad noised his way through a very intimate and charismatic set.
There was never a dull moment between untuned guitar riffs and his unique voice speeding up and slowing down to suit his own pace. Right when the audience started to anticipate rhyming lyrics or rely on rhythmic timing, the artist would allow himself long pauses or sporadic strumming to keep us interested.
Featuring lyrics about monsters, superheroes and being in love, (and even covering “Casper the Friendly Ghost” by Daniel Johnston) Jad gave to us an eccentric and memorable performance I think everyone present would find it hard to forget. He was strange, personable, and wailed so hard he busted his strings and broke the neck of his guitar only to promise everyone in his delicate speaking voice, “Oh, it will be okay.”
Not to mention he makes the cutest paper cuttings about monsters, ghosts, relationships, cats, nature and all-seeing eyes.
If you are a VIP, we will be selling the rest of his paper cuttings on our website in the next week or so. Also, if you missed the show, don’t miss out on the Jad Fair Artist in Residence releases throughout 2014. And did I catch a scent of Half Japanese blowing in the wind???……..
We’re gonna kick off Jad’s 2014 JNR residency with a free show at our space on Friday April 4th!
You can reserve a spot at the show by clicking this button.
To remind you, as part of Jad’s residency he will be creating FOUR full-length albums throughout the year, each a unique collaboration with other artists.

A little more about Jad:
In 1974, with his brother David, Jad Fair co-founded the lo-fi alternative rock group Half Japanese. Over the ensuing three decades, Half Japanese released nearly 30 records, and in the process, attracted a solid base of fans passionate about the band’s pure, unbridled enthusiasm for rock and roll. Jad also performs and records as a solo artist, and occasionally collaborates with such musicians as Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub, Moe Tucker (of Velvet Underground), Yo La Tengo, Steve Shelly and Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), John Zorn, Kramer, and more.
Jad’s talent for album cover design (he designed many of Half Japanese’s and all of his own solo album covers) led Jad to a second career as visual artist. His simple, joyous drawings and intricate, complex paper cuttings are shown in galleries around the world. Books of his artwork have been published in the U.S., UK, Germany, France and Japan. Jad is available for illustration work, including CD covers, t shirt designs, and advertisements.
