Jookabox "The Eyes Of The Fly" Released TodayApril 26, 2011Jookabox's final album The Eyes Of The Fly is available today via Asthmatic Kitty and Joyful Noise!
This recording is the final chapter in the history of a band as bizarre, anxious, and confusing as the music it makes. A band whose imagery echoes ghosts, zombies, decay, and the afterlife, inspired by life in the post-industrial land of white flight, now writes its own epitaph, carves its own headstone, and sings its swan song. Pitch-shifting, weird tuning, droning delay, pop-schizo eclecticism: all of Jookabox's characteristic ingredients are here with an added dose of darkness...

Joan of Arc Lightbox Orchestra, conducted by Fred Lonberg-HolmMarch 29, 2011Yet another treat from the one and only Joan Of Arc. Recorded live at the Hideout in Chicago on February 6, 2011 - "The Joan of Arc Lightbox Orchestra Conducted by Fred Lonberg-Holm" is the live component to the band's esoteric, expansive, and critically acclaimed Oh Brother LP.
In keeping with the expansive, improvisational theme of "Oh Brother", Joan Of Arc performed this evening as a special ensemble of THIRTEEN members. The insane noisy-jazz-leaning pieces were conducted by the legendary Fred Lonberg-Holm via the "Lightbox" (a system of light bulbs for each musician which directs the improvisation).
The album is released today, in a digital-only format, for just $4...

Jookabox's Final Album up for Pre-OrderMarch 24, 2011Sadly, Jookabox has decided to throw in the towel... The Eyes of the Fly is their last cryptic transmission - slated for release on April 26 via Asthmatic Kitty and Joyful Noise.
But rather than dwell on the extreme bummer of this breakup, we would like to draw attention to their spectacular, Kafkaesque final album: The Eyes Of The Fly. Pitch-shifting, weird tuning, droning delay, pop-schizo eclecticism: all of Jookabox's characteristic ingredients are here with an added dose of darkness...

Child Bite on Tour!March 23, 2011Our favorite Detroit-based, Robocop-advocate rockers Child Bite are hitting the road for a 28 day US tour (including 5 shows with the amazing Parts & Labor).
Like a perfectly balanced amphetamine drunk, the music of Child Bite exudes euphoria, urgency, baseless paranoia and a mild sense of vertigo. With their live show, Child Bite routinely throw caution to the wind - mashing their punk vigor with avant-garde ideals into a no-fluff sound that is both consistently danceable and brazenly psychotic. We highly recommend you check them out if you are in the neighborhood.

Memory Map signs to Joyful Noise!March 8, 2011Joyful Noise is extremely happy to be working with Bloomington, Indiana's Memory Map! The band's unique blend of indie-math-pop is equal parts catchy and compelling. The sprawling chord progressions and driving beats have drawn comparisons to bands like Cap'n Jazz and Q and Not U, but they also share commonalities with the music programmers of the Nintendo Entertainment System, and "Houses of the Holy" played at 45 rpm. Guitars weave in and out with no shame, as if the guitar playing of the 80's never became passe - and drums pound with eagerness as if Blink 182 doesn't suck.
The members of Memory Map also have some impressive musical pedigrees: Matt Tobey is a member of Bloomington favorite Good Luck and has played with and toured extensively with Kimya Dawson. Mike Bridavsky is of eargasm (and label-mates) Push-Pull, Mike Dixon earned his license to confuse while playing with Rapider Than Horsepower, and drummer Josh Morrow has played with muilti-experimentalists Impure Jazz.
Needless to say, we find this shit to be "legit" on the highest level.
The debut album Holiday Band will be released 05/10/11 on 180gm Red or Black LP, CD & Digital. Pre-Orders begin April 5.

Joan of Arc "Life Like" Out May 10, Pre-order now and get INSTANT MP3 download!February 28, 2011Last September when we released the JOA Cassette Box Set, there is a reason we identified the band as "one of the most unapologetically prolific bands of our generation"... because it's fucking true. Well, here is further evidence of this undeniable fact: Joan of Arc has yet another NEW ALBUM on the horizon!
Joan of Arc's brand spankin' new album "Life Like" is slated for release on May 10, 2011. Recorded by Steve Albini, this album rocks - which is to say, it's a complete departure from the esoteric 20 minute soundscapes of "Oh Brother". In contrast "Life Like" is Joan of Arc's most aggressively "rock" album in years - and their first with Cap'n Jazz guitarist/mastermind Victor Villarreal! More info here.

PUSH-PULL TO RELEASE "BETWEEN NOISE AND THE INDIANS" ON JUNE 23
April 7, 2009Our favorite band of Mikes is back. In many ways, for the first time. You may remember Push-Pull's previous effort 3 EP released back in 2007. When we consider Push-Pull's 3 EP next to their new Between Noise and the Indians our reaction is simply: "What the fuck happened?" What's happened is not so much a transition as it is an expansion and refinement of the band's earlier sound. What's clear is that this band has come into their own. Push-Pull have arrived.
The new album combines grandiose riffs and complex arrangements into an impressivingly anthemic album. Push-Pull has a sound that lies somewhere between high-brow prog and low-brow, PBR-soaked basement punk - - a sound which Skyscraper Magazine insists, "sounds nothing like Shellac, Big Black, or the Wipers" but which remains "bizarrely good". With "Between Noise..." one can hear hints of everything from Fugazi, Jackson 5, Melvins, or King Crimson.
On June 23, 2009 the new full-length - years in the works - will finally be released on CD via Joyful Noise. In addition to the CD, we will be releasing a limited run of original artwork peices from Mark Rice - who did the artwork for the album. These unique hand-made peices of art will be limited to 33 units, and will be sold with digital download codes of the entire album. More on this soon.
You can sample a song here: Wright, Right? (mp3)
