In the grand tradition of AC\/DC's \"Highway to Hell\" and Bon Jovi's \"Ol' 55,\" DMA's \"Riding Holiday,\" kicks off the album like the alien-autistic-stepchild of these aforementioned tracks. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThis from a man whose musical output has largely been an epic sequence of surrealist pastiche. See his bizarre take on folk music in Scientific Cricket, his cosmic paean to Michael Jackson in Ropechain etc. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBy comparison, to Jookabox's final record, \"The Eyes of the Fly\", Drem Beb sounds focused, minimalist, intense, relentless. It gets expansive-see the chorals on the title track-but it stays within a tightly regimented bandwidth. Although some of the paranoid, hive-mind sound carries over, especially on tracks like a 'Hod and Boe,' which sounds rather like its being sung by a nest of wasps. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eDMA (as Jookabox) famously began his career as a one-man-band in the grand old tradition of the 'one-man-band' (re: man with a bass-drum on his back and a monkey clapping symbols, collecting change from the crowd etc.). In this album, to some extent, he's returning to his roots. Although we'll miss the spectacle of Jookabox performing live, this studio album gives us a more meditative, and ultimately deeper sound. We can look forward to see Moose dancing around solo on a stage, but this album is, perhaps, best enjoyed in a sensory deprivation chamber, playing through a pair of earbuds. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eAccording to Adamson, the album is about, \"Dreams, babes, and Dream Bebs.\" He put the tracks together in a basement, shortly after the sudden dissolution of Jookabox. \"A lot of musical information was taken from dreams and looped,\" says Adamson. He concludes, \"Most of the lyrics are jokes, dreams, or sweet feelings about [my] babe. Mike Bridavsky is of eargasm (and label-mates) Push Pull, Mike Dixon earned his license to confuse while playing with Rapider Than Horsepower, and drummer Josh Morrow is a really big Blink 182 fan. Their disparate musical backgrounds and gaping age differences allow them to make music that creates its own context. Founder Moose Adamson began to tour as a one man band using loop pedals, pre-recorded beats, and live instruments. Their debut Scientific Cricket was released on Joyful Noise in 2007. Asthmatic Kitty got involved on the sophmore release, the beat and sample oriented Ropechain in 2008, which can be oversimplified as being about ghosts and Michael Jackson. Around this time Moose's old buddy Ostry (Patrick) Okerson joined the touring unit on drums. After a haunting vision during a promotional tour of Europe for Ropechain, the \"Grampall\" was dropped from their name. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e2009's Dead Zone Boys, the first release under this streamlined name, is about zombies and the landscape of middle-American urban sprawl. The zombie part came easy: Moose grew up on the east side of Indianapolis in the 90s, an area plauged by constant recession, pandemic homicide, and racial tension. A few strong tribes chose to stay in the area despite constant warnings from fleeing acquaintances. It was this frantic energy and violence that infused itself into the Jookabox experience. Ostry dubbed drums over nearly every song when the duo recorded at Rafter's Singing Serpent Studios. When Moose's loop pedals were damaged, the group chose to find some new members to round out the sound rather than buy more pedals. Indianapolis band buddies Lisa Berlin and Benny Sanders joined the group on keys and bass, and the band toured the US and Europe in support of Dead Zone Boys for about a year. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eNow in the dawn of the Mayan-predicted apocalypse, Jookabox's fourth and final installment is about humans, worms, slime, and rotting flesh. Humans as gross animals, oily and greasy. Worms writhing underground. Slime oozing and revealing true nature of things. Moose spills lyrics of sign-reading and hidden unities glowering out of the opaque everyday confusion. He calls this \"glyphing\"--as in reading the hieroglyphs. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eMoose began rapping in elementary school and certain raucous choral moments on the record retain a quality of monstrous juvenilia. Fragmentation and multiperspectivalism have been the name of the game in hip-hop since the dawn of time (or at least since sometime during the presidency of Ronald Reagan). Thesis, antithesis, synthesis then deconstruction- Jookabox lumbers fragments formed into a Frankenstein of sound. There's a Kafkaesque vibe to The Eyes Of The Fly; disorientating with a sense of danger. Pitch-shifting, weird tuning, droning delay, pop-schizo eclecticism: all of Jookabox's characteristic ingredients are there with an added dose of darkness and verfremdungseffekt.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThough Jookabox has officially called it quits, Moose will continue to tour and record under the new solo moniker, DMA. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eJookabox is a bit paranoid. The solid progression of the songs expresses an even more articulate vision of the album as a whole than their debut rock opera concept album, Sham Duvet. Guitars and percussion on this album are, as usual, stunning; leads and drums braiding together in an insane double helix of truly inspired rock music. From here, they take us down paths that are exponentially dark - with, \"No pussy shit\" as their credo. This is, in fact, the darkest and most mature effort we have seen from Child Bite. The shrilling, and impulsively head-bobbing verses of Scum Gene (Trash Vibrato) - are only rivaled in turpitude by Shawn Knight's lyrics; like those of \"Smear Where the Face Was\" that read: \"Drag behind or standing still - Impulse is fear, and fear you will.\" The lyrics, as a whole, paint a fuzzy picture of fear, paranoia, and despair. They are definitely Knight's spookiest.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBass player Sean Clancy expands on his unique style with brutal tones and syncopated rhythms that match the band's progression further into the macabre. If you are a drummer and you are unfamiliar with Moshe Rozenberg (ex-DD\/MM\/YYYY), just buy this record right away. I would still listen to this record if it were only drums.
