Based in Bloomington Indiana, Sleeping Bag began as Dave Segedy's solo drum project (then called "Whoa Bro Awesome"). Segedy started flirting with melody and was joined by Lewis Rogers on guitar and David Woodruff on bass, two front-men singers in their own right. Dave Segedy remains the group's songwriter and primary vocalist. Yes, the drummer writes and sings all the songs, imagine that!

Making good use of the palette of 90s indie rock, Sleeping Bag is sure to tickle the fancies of nerd-rock enthusiasts. Some hear Steven Malkmus in Segedy's delivery, while Segedy champions Polaris (yep, that band from Pete and Pete) as a primary influence. Nostalgia is at work here, but the songs can't be easily pigeonholed as throwback... They are simple, and simplicity is their asset. Founder Moose Adamson began to tour as a one man band using loop pedals, pre-recorded beats, and live instruments. Their debut Scientific Cricket was released on Joyful Noise in 2007. Asthmatic Kitty got involved on the sophmore release, the beat and sample oriented Ropechain in 2008, which can be oversimplified as being about ghosts and Michael Jackson. Around this time Moose's old buddy Ostry (Patrick) Okerson joined the touring unit on drums. After a haunting vision during a promotional tour of Europe for Ropechain, the "Grampall" was dropped from their name.

2009's Dead Zone Boys, the first release under this streamlined name, is about zombies and the landscape of middle-American urban sprawl. The zombie part came easy: Moose grew up on the east side of Indianapolis in the 90s, an area plauged by constant recession, pandemic homicide, and racial tension. A few strong tribes chose to stay in the area despite constant warnings from fleeing acquaintances. It was this frantic energy and violence that infused itself into the Jookabox experience. Ostry dubbed drums over nearly every song when the duo recorded at Rafter's Singing Serpent Studios. When Moose's loop pedals were damaged, the group chose to find some new members to round out the sound rather than buy more pedals. Indianapolis band buddies Lisa Berlin and Benny Sanders joined the group on keys and bass, and the band toured the US and Europe in support of Dead Zone Boys for about a year.

Now in the dawn of the Mayan-predicted apocalypse, Jookabox's fourth and final installment is about humans, worms, slime, and rotting flesh. Moose spills lyrics of sign-reading and hidden unities glowering out of the opaque everyday confusion. A very long time in popular music, especially in the present moment when the delivery systems, the methodologies, are changing weekly. And yet five years is the time it took Daniel Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Brother Danielson, a.k.a. Danielson, to complete this his newest work, Best of Gloucester County. Normally what happens to our artists of the popular song, in the completeness of adulthood, is that the demands of family and mid-life make the write/record/tour rat-race unappealing, and five years ensue because the artist no longer wants, not entirely, what the popular song offers in the way of profession and culture. Instead, he wants some of what family brings. Who can blame him?

But in a way, Danielson has, during the five years, let go (reluctantly, perhaps) of some family collaborators-namely his brothers Andrew and David, the percussionists, and childhood friends Chris and Ted, on keys and bass/guitar respectively. While sisters Megan and Rachel and Daniel's wife Elin, the essential chorus for many a Danielson Famile song, still appear, the bulk of Best of Gloucester County revolves around a completely new "team," as Smith has put it himself (Patrick Berkery- drums, percussion; Evan Mazunik- piano, organ; Joshua Stamper- bass; Sufjan Stevens- banjo, vocal; Andrew Wilson- electric guitar), most of them local players from the Gloucester County, NJ, area where Smith lives and works and has his studio.

That means that Best of Gloucester County is not, despite the title, a retrospective "Best of" album (that would be Trying Hartz, the last Danielson-related release), but rather a statement of intention. Danielson is now a locally-owned and locally-ambitious entity, and, in this case, a locally-released (Gloucester County) album, since this is the first Danielson release on Daniel Smith's own Sounds Familyre label. Seizing the means of production! With the result that here is a genuine attempt to dazzle! The tracks are thoroughly arranged (with bass player Joshua Stamper creating some great horn charts), and the rhythm section (which, in the past, was charming and lovely) sounds more like a rock and roll rhythm section than ever before, and the addition of an electric guitar player throughout means that the interplay between guitars, and the relationship between guitar and keys and glockenspiel, is quite a bit more dramatic, more cinematic.

What does that mean? What does a Danielson album actually sound like, if it is no longer "outsider art," but is, as it ought always have been considered, a thoughtful and persuasive contribution to the world of popular song? Suddenly the musical forebears are not quite as distant, so that you can hear bits of Captain Beefheart and Syd Barrett in the mix, psychedelic music in general, also the Kinks, the Beatles, T. Rex, and also country and folk and gospel (but in a way that doesn't sound like country and folk and gospel). These influences now give way to a completely realized musical vision, in which arrangement is pursued with a singularity untold earlier, but which is just as virtuosic as on the "chamber pop" releases of the present moment, on an Antony and Johnsons album, as on a Grizzly Bear album, as on a Joanna Newsom album. Danielson, that is, has become a beautiful thinker in popular music, idiosyncratic but accomplished, whose major keys are always slipping away into minor keys, whose chord progressions are most often chromatic, always modulating, whose voice, somewhere in the area of two entire octaves, is in every register here, as though he has to be the entire chorus himself.

For this writer, one of the very best of the earlier Danielson Famile releases was Tell Another Joke at the Ol' Choppin' Block (1997), in which there was a trance aspect to some of the compositions, as though the record were Qwaali or Raga. The good news for listeners to Best of Gloucester County is that it picks up that same meditative, and semi-improvised approach to the drone, in "Hosanna in the Forest," and in "Hovering Above that Hill." In fact, the album drives ultimately toward these more uncommon song structures, passing through some musical-theater and pop-inflected numbers-"People's Partay," and "Lil Norge".

The whole represents a new and welcome chapter in the Danielson oeuvre-a startlingly effective new band, a new thematic field (the locally-grown opus), produced with more sonic ambition than any recent Danielson effort, but without sacrificing the brave interior journey that we have come to expect from Daniel Christopher Smith: the world is complex, slightly dangerous, full of temptations, but there is still grace, beauty, meaning, and the music that is required to suggest all this is anything but easy, but that doesn't mean it is not rewarding, beautiful, funny, sad, and generous.

--Rick Moody, November 2010

Featuring collaborations with 14 musicians, including Zach Hill of Hella & Rob Lowe of Lichens, this is indie-rock for the initiated. Behind it all sits the patiently powerful drumming of Karl Hofstetter, punching in explosive accents when necessary, and seeming to thrive on the re-assemblage of simple beats into his own occasionally confounding patterns.

This giant of a record may indeed crush you, but that's only because it's giving you a bear hug and doesn't know its own strength.

Deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone... "Aerial Roots", the latest album from C.J. Committed to improvisational and experimental music, CJ has no "scene" or "genre" proper. Whether at a DIY venue or at an established club, the idea seems to be to escape from everything mundane, to have the whole audience leave their bodies and fly with him above it all. And while "Aerial Roots" has more anarchist body odor than much of the music today, the similarities between CJ Boyd and the punk underground only extend as far as their ideals. The zombie part came easy: Moose grew up on the east side of Indianapolis in the 90s, an area plagued by constant recession, pandemic homicide, and racial tension. A few strong tribes chose to stay in the area despite constant warnings from fleeing acquaintances. It was this frantic energy and violence that infused itself into the Jookabox experience. Since then, the area struggles to revitalize and Adamson's musical interests and excursions have crystallized into a startlingly singular and eclectic songwriting strategy. One thing is certain here: if vacant strip malls occupied only by shitdragged liquor stores and fluorescent check cashing joints are foreign to you, then Dead Zone Boys will be your guidebook, Jookabox your tour guide. Sophomore follow-up Ropechain pinwheeled like a kaleidoscope through old-time spirituals, punk, and club music hip-hop, blending these disparate elements into a cohesive and unique synthesis. Thematically both albums have dealt extensively with the paranormal, race, and madness. Last year after wrapping up Ropechain, the genre-warping Jookabox lost a Grampall (after a haunting vision), and regrouped, gaining a second member/drummer, Ostry Okerson. This year Jookabox absorbed two-fifths of Indianapolis' psych-pop ringleaders, Everthus the Deadbeats. Led by the stalwart Moose, this new band delivers a tightly realized live show and album replete with nods to early Ween, Black Sabbath, and fellow Indiana native, the King of Pop. Dead Zone Boys is an infectious soundtrack to humanity's last stand against decay and the dead. With their sophomore album "Slight Fountain", this Philadelphia-based five-piece displays touchingly naive bedroom lo-fi juxtaposed with disjointed arrangements, noisy multi-instrumental blasts, and nasty pitch-shifts - offering a thoroughly artful blend of indie rock. This is what the Magic Band would have sounded like if they were raised on Joan of Arc and Polvo, and had a singer that was void of any serious mental illness (though probably not the less serious kind).

But let's start at the beginning: In the Fall of 2006, principle songwriter Yianni Kourmadas embarked upon an extended trip to his native Greece. Far removed from family and friends, he wrote and recorded a handful of songs on a guitar he trash-picked in Athens and collected hours of field recordings. The songs and sounds he captured reflected happiness, curiosity and loneliness. When he returned to his home in Philadelphia, a small group of friends assembled to perform and record these songs. The band that emerged was Hermit Thrushes. As a result, the rhythms, melodies and structures of pre-American sounds (Greek folk, Byzantine chant, Andean music, Turkish folk, etc) have influenced the music of Hermit Thrushes more than any single band or musical trend.

The band released their debut, "Benaki" on Single Girl Married Girl in June of 2008, followed by a 7" record, a cassette tape, four national tours, and a notorious CMJ Marathon appearance (involving a band member, sans pants, badgering a Village Voice reporter). "Slight Fountain", the second album and first for Joyful Noise, streamlines the band's chaotic sound into a cohesive batch of songs - successfully balancing the contradictory elements. Throughout the album, Hermit Thrushes seemingly can't decide if they want to write touching acoustic-pop, or if they are bigger fans of Purple on Time era US Maple. But it is their ability to exist between these two extremes which makes their noisy experimentations relevant, and their songcraft firmly planted in the next level.

Track Listing

Written Today

Empty Room

Strawberry Shortcakes

He's Been Napping

Come With Me

Toy

Hallway

Peach Cobbler

Musing

Gretchen

Run Away, Teri

You, Blueberry Muffin

I Love My Things

Oh' Dear Handlebars

Description

Soul music for future generations of hopeless kids huffing paint in the basement...

Throughout the last 14 years, the enigmatic trio known as Marmoset have fostered a near-mythical cult status with their claustrophobic, moody, and etherial blend of indie pop. A Tempo! Throughout the Austria-based trio's 11 year history the band has developed a name for themselves with stellar releases and relentless touring throughout the globe (by some counts, 75854 shows). The new album offers a meaty, booming dose of technical rock which is easily their finest work to date. With A Tempo! A Tempo! Valina combine passages of sheer beauty with intense outbursts of abstract guitar noise into pure (math? post?) rock fury. Jaw-dropping musicianship informs a uniquely rhythmic, harmonious, and ultimately unclassifiable blend of riff-heavy rock.

A distinctly "un-American" sound helps distinguish Valina from their [enter prefix here]-rock contemporaries. Their music does not contain endless Don Caballero-esque guitar tapping, nor does it completely loose it's appeal after the initially other-worldly instrumentation becomes understandable. Yet they obviously relish in unusual time signatures - and they are willing to showcase their instrumental expertise within the boundaries of actual "songwriting." Without much of an interest in pop culture, and (so describes the band) "bubblegum expression", Valina seems to treat each moment as an adventure in music, a chance to explore the conventions of loud rock and turn them all upside-down.

A Tempo! A Tempo! was released throughout Europe in spring 2008; and in April 2009 we will finally see the US release through Joyful Noise. Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago with the world-class Steve Albini, A Tempo! A Tempo! is a career-defining moment for the band; a sturdy, brisk, edgy album that is at once honest, nostalgic, and brave. The vocals stay surprisingly calm and melodic - never moving toward the too-often-ill-advised hardcore growl, allowing them to cleverly contrast with the swirling thunder of the rhythm section. Fans of Fugazi, Shellac, Battles, or even the Pixies will appreciate the unique blend of time-bending instrumental breakdowns, angular guitars, and savage, pulverizing beats. Valina is heavy rock at its best: creative, genuine, contemplative, and at times, stunningly fierce.

Track Listing

The Lake

The Magic

If The L Were A G

The Geek

Eye Cry

$

Hungry

Fire

Power

Sara

Pockets

Wright, Right?

Wrapped Her In Horsepower

Description

When we consider Push-Pull's 3 EP next to their new Between Noise and the Indians our reaction is simply: "What the fuck happened?"

What's happened is not so much a transition as it is an expansion and refinement of the band's earlier sound. Their sound lies somewhere in between high-brow prog and low-brow, PBR-soaked basement punk. With Between Noise and the Indians, it seems the trio have sharpened their wit and crafted their musical skills into something unique and undeniably important - a sound which Skyscraper Magazine insists, "sounds nothing like Shellac, Big Black, or the Wipers" but which remains "bizarrely good". Their triumphant sound is challenging by nature, but never succumbs to prog's esoteric tendencies or masturbatory "time signature stuffing". Using their brains and their balls, Push-Pull manage to effortlessly shuffle time-signatures while displaying an endless supply of hooks behind the walls of aggressive noise and pummeling beats.

Push-Pull released their 3 EP in late 2007 on Joyful Noise. In November 2008 Sick Room Records released their never-properly-released first album Hello Soldier and in the same month the band split wax with Prizzy Prizzy Please on the PPPPPEP. The Between Noise... album title was taken from a roughly translated Italian review praising them as "noise-rock flavored with intuitions post-punk" with "united polish madness hooks". We can only imagine that the writer was trying to communicate the band's knack for composing 15 second catchy choruses within aggressive, noisy experimental rock bookends; or their knack for connecting threads from song to song in sculpting an album that is truly more than the sum of it's parts. But they sincerely want to make music that you will love.

Originally forming in 2003, this NYC area band released their debut Architectural Failures on Pangaea Recordings (now Natural Selection Records) back in 2006. The band's second album Assemble moves in more clear, concise direction while somehow containing instrumentation that, here and there, seems to slide off its track, breaking into weirdly juxtaposed parallel trajectories. But for all of their esoteric and almost academic experimentation a cheerful soulfulness comes through on this album that distinguishes HRC from many of their musical contemporaries.

Throughout the album, the intellectual rigor of its composition is energized and animated by a manic gleefulness: the unpolluted self-enjoyment produced in the process of generating such nimble patterns in sound. Particularly on tracks like "Toothless Beau" and "Symmetry Chameleon" there is a kind of giddy, child-like ecstasy that comes through in both the instrumentation and the vocals. And while much of this album can be appreciated by those who have suffered through upper-level music composition classes, schooling is not a requirement to enjoy this music. With Assemble Hi Red Center have created an endearingly odd album - challenging and strange, but also honest and unpretentious.

Track Listing

Title Track (A Waste Of Time And Space)

The Trial

Rent To Own

Designer Impostors

Everything Is Getting Better/Worse

Urine: The Picture

The Meeting

What's On?

Swamp Things

What Happens?

The Best Song Ever

Telescope

Stranded In The Future

Description

Man at Arms makes music that has been called "The most masculine thing I've ever heard," "articulate" and "like Primus" (which they sympathize with, but are reluctant to understand). Child Bite's blend of sophisticated noise-pop and indie rock has enough time changes and feedback layering to please hipsters and experimental rockers alike, recalling bands like Brainiac, early Deerhoof, and Pere Ubu. The deceptively danceable music of this band only masks true experimental flair. As you would be able to tell from the sleeve of Mr. Bungle tattoos on Shawn Knight's arm, they've flirted with the darkest of experimental and progressive sounds, only to emerge with a very twisted take on indie rock.

The no-fluff New York style punk sensibility is combined with flourishes faintly reminiscent of acid-teas-era experimentation, and freaky, tweaked-out vocals. Alternating between 8-bit Nintendo sounds and expansively spacy and epic movements, the music of Child Bite will constantly challenge whichever musical genre you choose to describe them. Like a perfectly balanced amphetamine drunk, there is a sense of euphoria, urgency, and baseless paranoia blended with an overall sense of velocity, a hidden logic and inertia that is both satisfying and mildly frightening. From the Swell Maps-inspired tumultuous clamor of their debut EP Hiddenforbidden, their addictive two-minute anthems on Today It's You, and the epic (for Marmoset at least) joyful dirges from Record in Red, Florist Fired has it all.

Although principal songwriter Jorma Whittaker possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Beatles-esque melodies and is more likely to cite his musical influences from John Lennon and friends, you get the unmistakable feeling that the band owes way more to a Keith Richards-led Stones swagger, but without the budget or access to premium pharmaceuticals. Since that time the band has developed a more epic and (art)rocking sound, recalling a late 70's early 80's folk-punk sub-genre that never actually existed. These are songs of exultation and despairing regression; loose, harsh, sweet, mathy ballads about being a member of this final and dissolving generation. What might appear on the surface to be solipsistic or psychotic about Man at Arms, we here at Joyful Noise feel to be highly original and radically innovative. Man at Arms has been orchestrating clever, half-crazed, noisy punk-rock critiques of late stage consumer capitalism since their first appearance with their Friction Records 2005 debut Being and Commerce. The split album with Abner Trio showcases the band with a tighter, more developed sound, without sacrificing any of the hysteria of their previous recordings.
