Jarring rhythms and feedback-drenched guitar tones lace Sunshine's nine surprisingly songful tunes - creating a sound informed by their predecessors (Cocteau Twins, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson & Creatures), but strikingly new.

After years of friendship, Sarah Register and Andrya Ambro's Talk Normal first emerged on the NYC music scene in 2007, initially releasing demos, cassettes and their Secret Cog vinyl EP. Following the 2009 release of their debut album Sugarland on Rare Book Room Records (recorded and mixed by Nicolas Vernhes), Talk Normal released a handful of 7"s (including a split 7" with Thurston Moore on Nathan Howdeshell from The Gossip's Fast Weapons Records) and shared the stage with the likes of Sonic Youth, Wire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Zola Jesus.

In the years since Sugarland, Talk Normal have refined their noisy vigor into the diverse batch of songs found on Sunshine. Tracks like "Bad Date", "Cover", and "Hurricane" carry almost a meditative emotional energy, where others like "Sunshine" and "Shot This Time" err on the side of explosive driving rock. Plus dance-y "XO", narrative noisers "Lone General" and "Baby, Your Heart's Too Big", and standout vocal harmonies on "Hot Water Burns". Produced by the band, Sunshine was recorded in 2011 by Christina Files at Vacation Island Studios in Brooklyn NY and Echo Canyon West in Hoboken NJ (Files also contributed to production). Allen Farmello mixed at The Snow Farm in Brooklyn NY. Written over the course of years, culminating in frequent jumps from studio to studio, and with the band going on two month-long tours mid-process (!) this album is laced with a sense of urgency and jubilation unique to the path it traveled into reality.

Unlike traditional noisy-rock, Talk Normal's Sunshine is steeped in melody, albeit unconventional melody. Sweet-sounding female vocals are present throughout, sometimes as sung lyrics and sometimes as instruments themselves. Ambro & Register's combined voices often volley back and forth, each providing equal contributions to vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation - meticulously orchestrating not only the arrangements, but also the tonality of each collected sound. As Pitchfork describes: "(their) vocals can handle both desperate screech and matter-of-fact detachment somewhere between Karen O and Kim Gordon". Combined with Register's flowing, nearly-drony riffs and Ambro's finely choreographed beats, the end result is a natural sonic cohesion. Maybe not the sunshine you're used to, but rays within which you'll want to bask.

<!-- Remarketing tags may not be associated with personally identifiable information or placed on pages related to sensitive categories. There was an attempt at music lessons when Cole was a child but they came to an abrupt end when the piano teacher proclaimed he was "unable to be taught." Cole has a form of autism called Asperger’s Syndrome.

Working with him on this record has been a revelatory experience, observing how it affects his ability to write and perform his songs, both negatively and positively. After my first chat with his mom about his music, Cole and I exchanged contact info. Over the next few years he sent me his songs—old demos, roughly recorded piano pieces, and fully realized songs. He played, wrote, and recorded all the instruments. I was impressed with the range of his music, his smart lyrics, and unaffected vocals. I admire that he is not afraid to create from a position of vulnerability and is willing to let the listener hear it—which is something I always struggle with.

When Joyful Noise invited me to curate an album for their White Label Series, I felt this would be an opportunity to share Cole’s music. He and I worked with Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN, giving sonic cohesion to this collection of dark birds. Drummer Ben Lumsdaine replaced Cole’s computer beats with a human groove, and my friend Jocelyn Hach played some gorgeous viola."

— Kelley Deal

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0844/5451/products/JNR250-9_Cole-Vargas_1024x1024_31bbe2f4-6a53-4982-b66b-14ff022f3ad5.jpg?v=1557421792
tomberlin-at-weddings-private-stash
Tomberlin 'At Weddings' [PRIVATE STASH]

LISTEN

At Weddings by Tomberlin

Curator Statement

"It was an out-of-the-blue text message from Owen P. "Can I send you some recordings by my friend Sarah Beth? So familiar, almost as if I were actively collaborating in the music and making the album with John all along... It was the music I wanted to make. Melodic, repetitive, sonic, simple, beautiful, interesting, and sincere. I think in a way this album became the template for all the music I’ve been a part of since. I was aware of his involvement in Nurse with Wound but hadn't any prior experience of these releases. When I was asked to choose a release for this series the A Gain tape instantly sprung to mind. "Rooftops" was the first track I had heard from the release and was instantly bowled over by how beautiful the track is. For such minimal components and lines the track holds a gripping movement which doesn't let up. The shifts are slight but full of meaning, and the understated production values only add to the overall charm. I see these tracks as 'workouts', instead of flooding the palette, Potter focuses on a few keys elements and stretches these as far as they can go. The lines are simple but perfect, even down to the introduction of subtle vibrato at the end of certain phrases. It's incredibly well constructed.

My other choice was maybe going to be another one of his ICR tapes The Scythe which is a very different sound and if you've not heard it I recommend it. It must’ve been around 1999 that I first got to hear some of these songs, by way of my guru and mentor at the time, the musical shaman, producer HP Gundersen. I was 16, recording what was to become my debut album, Faces Down, co-produced by HP and the wizard Jørgen Trœen at Duper Studio. Next-door, in Gjøa Studio, was the young producer Kato Ådland, my guitar player at the time, who since has served my music in many capacities, most recently as producer on my four latest albums. From these three peculiar characters I kept learning about a shy uncle from England who would occasionally come to visit our little town to record his bisarre and beautiful miniature songs and symphonies. Together these four made up the unlikely quartet that became House Of Hiss. Their first album No-Fi, from which many of the songs on this album originate, was never released. It was the most exquisite, luxurious little secret enjoyed by myself and a few lucky others over the years. It didn’t seem fair. When I heard the song Shang, sung by Sean O’Hagan from The High Llamas, my favorite band at the time, my world suddenly got a lot smaller, and my horizon a lot bigger.

Alisdair’s vast array of influences, and his low-key sensibility must’ve quietly expanded all of our horizons in various ways - certainly mine. In Kato, Jørgen and HP, Alisdair had connected with a trio of adventurous partners, up for the challenge of deconstructing and rebuilding his avant garde easy listening ditties into House Of Hiss - with a little help from a cast of their favorite musical friends. It was perhaps Alisdair's intricate, yet affable songs, and the ambitious, playful recordings of House Of Hiss that best encapsulated the range of influences and sounds that informed much of the music that would result from this tiny musical scene for a few years into the new millennium. Which is why I’ve been hoping for an opportunity just like this to share the glorious music of House Of Hiss with the world beyond those studio walls.

Please enjoy,
- Sondre Lerche, Curator

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0844/5451/products/JNR325-3_House-of-Hiss_cover-art_2108937f-ce0b-474c-bcbb-3cc54315b398.jpg?v=1578934887
jeremy-freeze-breaking-the-skin-private-stash
Jeremy Freeze 'Breaking the Skin' [Private Stash]

LISTEN / Purchase from the Artist

CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE DIRECT FROM THE ARTIST

Breaking the Skin by Jeremy Freeze

Arkabutla Dam

Over and Over

Visitor

Last of my Butterfly

Certain Things About Yourself

Terrified and Witless

Run to You

Sharps Collector

Curator Statement

I met Jeremy Freeze in 2011 at a DIY festival in Chicago called “Bitchpork”. Jeremy is cool & collected, complimented by an impressive work ethic but never showing sweat. Moving from Memphis, Tennessee, Jeremy became my roommate for a year and a half. It was easy to bond with Jeremy. At the time we had both spent over a decade in the “weird-american underground” community and we had both sacrificed a big part of our lives for music. With his relocation came the unpacking of a fresh start, an enormous feat for any creature. Over the course of a year I witnessed Jeremy go through a vivid transformation. The way Jeremy took full agency over his life filled me with admiration. I admire Jeremy for his discipline, his mindfulness, and his ability to stay true to himself. I admire his ability to focus and execute creative ideas. He has a spirit that soars for the purity of life. The collection of songs in “Breaking The Skin” were written and recorded during his period of climbing that metaphorical mountain. The songs on this album recollect the mind of a person who has made great sacrifice, and has a deep understanding of life & music. I believe that Jeremy is the person in my life most deserving of this opportunity, and I am confident that the message other’s find in his music will breed good into the world. A smiling bearded face, with a charming southern growl, there to hold doors open, take the names for the guest list, and apply wrist-bands. The night that followed was a blur of clipping speakers, endless whiskey, and Carolina charm. Well, there's a lotta best bands in the world but for right now for my brain and heart and soul The Coolies are THEE BEST. Only because I just saw them come to town (that being London town on the wild island of the United Kingdom) and they totally sandblasted the place with sweet and strange guitar and bass action. I was not prepared! I actually went to see some other band who were on the bill but I did know that an old chum from New Zealand, Stefan Neville, was playing in this band The Coolies and that they were maybe putting a record out with another cat I know from Western Massachusetts and Stefan's always come hard with killer weirdo music but WHOA, The Coolies were a trio, two women, bass and guitar, and Stefan at the kit. Whoever, whatever they were all I can say is what I heard that eve was the most engaging, in-the-moment punk no-wave sonic heartstring buzzing clatter rock n roll I'd not come across for AGES. I went nutso and bought all the recordings I could find, which weren't too many but they were all choice and charmed (even the offshoot discs - check out the Piece War LP - it is killer diller (I need the lathe cut 10" (edition of 30 copies!!)(!))) so when Joyful Noise asked if I had any ideas for a special artist ("me") curated release I immediately told them to cut a path straight to South Auckland New Zealand where the Coolies reside and rule. This LP is early jams and is as boss as anything they've unleashed ain't no doubt about it and it is SERIOUSly the JAM! Tina Pihema and Sjionel Timu are great great song lights resonating the beauty of Maori awesomeness and you will thank the gods of rock n' roll when you enter their sonic universe. her Buke & Gase collaborator Aron Sanchez were making lit up my imagination & joy, with each of their contributions distinct yet interwoven.

I’ve followed Arone’s creations in as many other presentations as I could witness (mostly musical but not excluding fun times with power tools) - it must be mentioned that I’ve been moved repeatedly by her Dronechoir performances. Regarding this outward expression that you have in your hands - Mistresses - over the past two years it's been a remarkable delight to witness the evolution of these creations between Arone & co-collaborator + eclectic percussion powerhouse Ryan.

This series (WLS) got me thinking about the mandate “to save great music from obscurity”, “best artists you’ve never heard of”. I wanted so badly to do right by that, in a thousand different ways, which took me a while to parse. Something kept spinning me back to, even with artistic ‘degrees of success’, the hustle is often never over, & there's no guarantee of attention paid or space to expand within. Not to mention basic necessities, or the loose idea of "a room of one's own" - the former mandatory, & the latter particularly poignant to me. The world asks artists big & small to spread so thin. The inner & outer revolutions needed to carefully treasure these precious moments can seem rarely pursued... I sincerely appreciate the energy & care Joyful Noise puts forth in doing their part experimenting with what support/advocacy can look like. & I'm honored to help facilitate sharing more of this music, with more of you.

- Sarah Register, Curator

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0844/5451/products/JNR325-11_Mistresses-cover-art_f7b8a4c8-d924-4dbf-82ae-08bb9f5dad5d.jpg?v=1578935635
julian-bozeman-need-more-time-private-stash
Julian Bozeman 'Need More Time?' I can't even remember the first time we met, because our friendship seems so inextricably interwoven with my memory-fabric of growing up in the music world and playing shows. I feel like as soon as my old band Prince Rama started touring, we kept finding ourselves serendipitously in old warehouses, musty basements, and abandoned fire stations with his group, Quiet Hooves. Night after night, my sister and I would both fight our way to the front to stare wide-eyed-jaw-dropped in wonder throughout their entire set. Never had I experienced such unbridled, eccentric, yet organized and controlled energy. At the end of their set, my cheeks would hurt from smiling so much. In case you never heard of em, Quiet Hooves is one of the most unexpected underrated bands of the early 2000s. A merry band of pranksters/artists/curators from Athens, Georgia, they were comprised of anywhere between six and thirteen members onstage playing at full volume like a high energy vaudevillian underground pop orchestra, written and conducted by Julian. We soon found out that not only is Julian an incredible sonic architect and bandleader, but a talented video artist as well. Between their tours, we'd sneak Julian into the van with us and take him to Europe, Australia or Tasmania on tour to set up live manipulations of vhs feedback of us playing on stage. His onstage and offstage presence soon became as indispensable as an unspoken third member in our band, translating our music into a whole universe of vhs patterns and feedback. He was also the genius behind the "15 Minute Exorcise" VHS tape and several other music videos of ours.

After some years had gone by, the music landscape shifted topographies and both our bands were unexpectedly tapped by fate's mortal hand. I remember meeting up with Julian for coffee after years of not seeing each other and realizing that we were both stuck in similar uncanny positions of figuring out what it means to write music without a band and the existential task of making a record totally "solo". He sent me a couple demos of stuff he was working on and it totally blew me away. With Julian recording and playing all the parts himself, I could finally hear with great clarity the man who was the songwriter/producer genius behind Quiet Hooves, shining bare and brightly in all its quiet brilliance. The songs are so layered and multi-faceted, the arrangements so sophisticated, I could see why he needed thirteen people to play all the parts. I don't even understand how he keeps it all in his head, let alone also hold a full-time job, father two children, and still find time and space to record in his Brooklyn apartment. There are elements that harken to a male version of Mr. Heartbreak (my favorite Laurie Anderson record), or some of the more sugary Frank Zappa tracks, with all the endearing schizophrenia of misunderstood pop kingpin weirdos Ariel Pink, R Stevie Moore or Harry Mary, yet still retaining this totally unique, unmistakably authentic "Julian" quality. I'm really psyched for this record to be out in the world for people to hear-- Julian is one of the most hard-working, dedicated, creative, and underrated music geniuses of our time and the world needs his music now more than ever before.

- Prince Rama, Curator

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0844/5451/products/JulianBozeman_NMT_AlbumCover_9dcac175-4bba-4153-b94f-64f513b93aaa.jpg?v=1578935704
pity-party-private-stash
Pity Party! I wasn't feeling good. Not being able to play music live, something I've done my whole life, had me feeling even worse. To remedy this, I began experimenting with live streaming myself playing these new tunes as they developed. It was a fun way to keep in touch with the people who like my music and the material developed as I shared with people, all stripped down and acoustic-like. And it seemed like people were tuning in and enjoying it, too! Eventually, I went to California and made a couple big ole' records complete with a band, but when it came time to go out and play shows, it was just lil' ole me and a guitar. Sometimes a generous woman to share singin' duties. Just how it worked out, I guess. I don't prefer the acoustic versions to the albums, but it was a beautiful experience playing them like that for people who hadn't seen me play for awhile. It seemed a shame to not preserve that experience in some way.

During breaks in show playing, I began going into a friend's studio. He'd put a big reel of tape on the machine and I'd just play. In between takes, we'd laugh about Nathan for you, catch up on each other's lives, then I'd finish up, pack up my guitar and split. I recorded the songs I'd been using to make up the setlist for this year's shows. Songs from Margot's swan dive, Sling Shot To Heaven (sorta my unofficial first "solo" record), songs from Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset, and songs from the next solo album, ????? (Shhh, don't tell anyone). I even did a song that's not on any of those records, called, "In Some Dreams", which one or two of you might remember as "Mayo Clinic Blues" or "Minnesota" from those old live streams. This is meant as a keepsake for those of you who shared my comeback year with me, and all of those early live streams when I was unsure whether or not there would be a "comeback". It's unfussy. Just a permanent record of how this particular batch of songs sounded when I played 'em mostly by myself in the year 2017. It's good for late night drives or Fall night's with the windows open. It’s a sense of confrontation with truth, one that cuts right through the noise of life and hits me straight in the chest. There is a transcendence in it—their persistence in the face of physical struggle allows these artists to surge past the confines of their instruments and express something more deeply human. Their playing feels vocal.

I’ve never encountered a vocalist that expresses that kind of near-prophetic balance between beauty and pain in quite the same way as Like A Villain. The opening, eponymous cut from Bast feels like a primer on it. In fact, at several points along this 2014 album’s 37 minutes, I feel like Holland Andrews’ voice shares something simultaneously more visceral and more ethereal than much else I can remember.

'Complex, rich emotionality inspires my work, as well as finding the sweet spot where catharsis is discovered through dissonance and resonance to cultivate healing,' they write. I’ve tried hard to articulate why I chose ‘a new myth’ to be reissued on this white label series and this cultural restructuring is the closest I’ve come to explaining my fascination with the record and why I think it’s an important document to the sound and spirit of a South African artistic generation who looks back while travelling forward. To talk about African music is to talk about motion, about how representations of a spiritual ontology which runs counter to the now hegemonic western mode of thought necessitates the ability to continually morph into a reflection of the wider world, albeit in forms that may not satisfy the hierarchical criteria imposed by a culture viewed as capital, in the west. The Brother Moves On have created an album possessed by a spirit of transformation, it subverts tired notions of what it is to be an African artist in our times and infuses our understanding with dreams of a place where all musics and people sing a common song, and reflect ‘A New Myth’."

- Shabaka Hutchings, Curator

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0844/5451/products/JNR350-2_album_0fa8f033-d7b5-4bae-89e8-cf694657e52c.jpg?v=1605801734
thelma-the-only-thing-private-stash
Thelma 'The Only Thing' [PRIVATE STASH]

Tracklist

The Only Thing by Thelma

Curator Statement

"I met many incredible musicians during my time working at the Brooklyn art space Silent Barn. One of them was Thelma, the songwriting moniker of Natasha Jean Jacobs. When I heard her 2019 sophomore album, I was immediately struck: The Only Thing is a beautiful, strange, swelling synth-pop record, with shredding string arrangements and eclectic, expressive vocals. I was struck, too, by its sharp lyrics, some of which chronicle the inherent heaviness of living in a body, of invisible and internalized pains. Yet there also seemed to be an intriguing droll humor to these songs.

The Only Thing quickly became one of my favorite albums of the year. It wasn’t until after a few months of listening on repeat that I learned more about the struggles Jacobs faced in making and releasing it—about how during the process, she faced a number of medical emergencies including being diagnosed with a rare soft tissue disease that made it hard for her to even hold a guitar anymore. As a result, she wrote the skeleton of this record with one hand on a tiny synth while in recovery from surgery. “It was the first time I was able to enjoy making music in a few years,” she wrote in 2019. “I was reunited with the feeling that making music is The Only Thing that makes me feel a very particular and necessary sense of being alive.”

Her medical condition also led to challenges finding label support for the record, due to her decreased ability to tour. But hearing this part of The Only Thing ’s story was a reminder of how the demanding touring expectations of today’s music economy can take a toll on the body and how, as Jacobs has discussed, ableist attitudes create a spectrum of barriers in all corners of the industry. But before the super narcissistic band leader shows up and takes the reins, they will often hang out making stream-of-consciousnesses music that is often more interesting than the conscripted “songs”. In many cases “songs” are what keep musicians from doing their best work. These scraps of music that get lost forever in practice rooms are often more like the artist or bored receptionist’s doodles. Purely subconscious spelunkery. The Necks, Ornette Coleman, Jackson Pollock, Negativland, David Lynch and William Burroughs certainly knew the subconscious is where the real wisdom lives. This can be achieved by playing an instrument that you don’t usually play or by playing out of your usual genre. If you hand a guy an electric guitar and he grew up on rock and roll, the outcome is somewhat predictable at this point, mimicry of 50 years of rock and blues players. This is why virtuosos are boring to watch after a few minutes of amazement. I cannot count the number of times I’ve been asked to “play dumber” when recording drum tracks. I spent much of my youth learning hot drum licks, then my early 20s learning not to ever do them.

As I facilitated these recordings I steered these amazing players away from the tired tropes of rock and roll. On “Is Adam OK?” I sat at the piano prepared with sweaters across the strings. Virtuoso, multi-instrumentalist, super-freak Greg Saunier sat beside me at the piano and off into the abyss we wandered for 22 minutes. As the brilliant players of Joyful Noise showed up at Postal Recording on a frozen December day, we gave them little instruction. Their inner animals knew just what to do. There is no such thing as a mistake in this kind of “composition”. As we thru greed and mistrust of our fellow humans speed toward the abyss of extinction, it is important to remember the goodness and kindness that we are all capable of. Make connections. What results is some of the craziest sounding prog-like instrumental music you're likely to ever hear.

Plan D is a project with four distinct installments (SW, NE, SE, NW), featuring the following drummers:

Angela Lese (Jax Hollow, Raelyn Nelson Band)
Ches Smith (Secret Chiefs 3, Marc Ribot, Mary Halvorson)
Clem Burke (Blondie, Eurythmics)
Coady Willis (Big Business, Melvins, The Murder City Devils, Hew Time)
Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross, Nirvana, Hew Time)
Danny Frankel (Lou Reed, Kamikaze Ground Crew, Urban Verbs, Bo Diddley)
Dave Lombardo (Mr Bungle, Misfits, Suicidal Tendencies)
Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, David Lee Roth, Electric Light Orchestra)
Kyle Stevenson (HELMET, Big Collapse)
Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden)
Matt Chamberlain (Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan, Bill Frisell)
Mindee Jorgensen (Dale Crover Band, Dangerously Sleazy, ModPods)
Joe Plummer (Mister Heavenly, Cold War Kids, The Shins, Hew Time)
John Tempesta (The Cult, White Zombie, Testament)
Paul Christensen (Qui, hepa.Titus)
Pej Mon (Satyasena, Secret Chiefs 3, Girth)
Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros, Infectious Grooves)
Troy Zeigler (Serj Tankian, Juliette Lewis, Buckethead)

WATCH THE VIDEO / Quotes

"Plan D is a musical demonstration built for Dimension, Duration, and Dynamics.
