A year-long period of limited resources and contact inspired the band to reflect on the various environments in which they've created music over the years: to comb through their previous sounds and creative approaches, and fuse them together with new ideas, ultimately producing a sort of future/past alchemy. FICTION EP is as much a project of curation as it is one of creation: sifting, re-imagining, and re-framing, sometimes completely disassembling and then building from the ground up. Just ask Montreal outfit SUUNS. As a band who have been around for thirteen years and toured all corners of the world, there comes a point where the veil needs to be fully lifted. Up till now, the experimental rockers have revelled in mystery like a silhouette disappearing into the mist, putting out albums that rest comfortably in ambiguity, detachment and innuendo. But lately, SUUNS appear to be more comfortable coming clean with their own inner workings. “This is a very geeky thing,” singer/guitarist Ben Shemie delineates. “But we never really commit to a certain kind of tonality. Whether it’d be major or minor, there's always a certain kind of evading of what your own expectation is.”

Nevertheless, SUUNS’ fifth full-length album The Witness – their first for Joyful Noise Recordings – once again marks a shrewdly offbeat left turn. The tried-and-true narrative for a band of this nature is always to ‘move to the deep end’ or ‘out of the comfort zone’. In some ways that rings true on The Witness, though one could say these eight movements actually show SUUNS in their most comfortable, candid state. Self-recorded and self-produced over the majority of 2020 – a year of strife, solitude and reflection –, The Witness finds the band holding a magnifying glass over their own default state of playing and performing. It’s a swift departure from previous album Felt, which exults in harvesting haphazard ideas in their embryonic, demoed versions, as if letting loose a glorious fireworks display into the heavens.

The Witness, meanwhile, pours SUUNS’ music into a more intricate mold, compelling Shemie to unravel himself lyrically in a much more pronounced fashion. “There’s something interesting about the idea of a collective witness, being a witness to the time we’re living in now,” he reflects. “And the connectedness of what we all have in common. But also, literally: bearing witness to all sorts of things and how that desensitises you. There’s a recurring line that comes back on the record: “I know that you’ve seen it too.” A song like ‘Clarity’ is also about pulling the veil off and seeing things for what they really are. It kind of comes down to being true to yourself and acknowledging what is and isn’t real.”

Opening cut ‘Third Stream’ experiments with jazzy brass and prowling piano flourishes akin to Talk Talk’s Spirit Of Eden, sounding like a band being profoundly present, being a witness to themselves in some respect. “These songs are a little more expansive-sounding”, drummer/percussionist Liam O’ Neill comments, “And I can imagine that if we get to play them live, they’ll probably be even longer. But that was the general idea, to the extent that we never have an intentionality behind what kind of record SUUNS is going to make. After Max (Henry) left, being ten years in the game, we felt a little bit exhausted by that endless album/tour cycle. Night after night, we realized: ‘We’re really just playing a bunch of songs.’ With The Witness, we tried to do something a little more immersive and longform. That’s the reason we always loved playing ‘Edie’s Dream’, because it’s like a whole environment you step into. Or just incorporating drones we freely improvised. Those moments were always our favorite parts during live sets. It felt like both us and the audience were part of this whole wave that was happening.”

Perhaps unintentionally, SUUNS have always been a strangely intimate band, and with The Witness, they themselves became aware of the extent of this. More than ever, SUUNS keeps those spontaneous moments in the album recordings. “We just do that more improvised stuff so naturally live,” Joe Yarmush adds. “It’s kind of weird that it hasn’t been a big part of our albums up till now.. We’re trying to embrace that side of the band for sure. That’s also part of SUUNS just being the three of us now.” Though Max Henry had left the band in 2018, he still contributed material to the album, most notably on ‘Witness Protection’. O’ Neill: “Max is such a brilliant musician, but it became clear he wasn’t into the touring lifestyle anymore. He wanted to go back to school; right now he’s studying music psychology. Which is much more of what he’s supposed to do.”

With one member down and Shemie living an ocean apart in Paris, a fresh challenge manifested for the trio to find each other again, both socially and creatively. More than any other SUUNS record, The Witness employs a jazz mentality of designing a continuous vibe over the notion of separate chapters. There’s a level of relaxation, of accepting the band’s primal instincts, and a concentrated attempt to maximize and revise said instincts. Yarmush: ”It was a conscious decision to make the album sound like one song. We wanted to calm down a bit, even during the mixing process: our notes were simply ‘you have to settle down’. I couldn’t technically explain what I meant by that, but the songs needed to settle down. We were basically trying to hold back all the bombastic tendencies and make things sound very subtle.”

The ethereal ‘Timebender’, which materialized out of vastly disparate parts, still entertains the idea that you’re tapping directly into the band’s inner pulse. ‘Go To My Head’ captures SUUNS at its most outright gorgeous, albeit habitually elusive. “Those guitars at the beginning are very much classic rock, definitely a Fleetwood Mac ‘Albatross’ kind of vibe,” Shemie comments. “I wanted to put that song out last, but I was voted out. It was difficult to put together, because we put a lot of material into this song. It wasn’t like learning three chords and a beat. There are a lot of different parts. Ultimately, it came together beautifully. I’m very proud of that one.”

Though the world is becoming a more distorted, confusing place, The Witness extends a sonic lifeline to latch onto, one bolstered by years of friendship, chemistry and trust. For a band known for its cryptic magnetism, this album marks SUUNS’ most generous, stripped-down and affecting work to date. Shemie: “There’s always this restraint in SUUNS: the question of ‘how long can we hold off?’ I think it's beautiful that way because it always brings out something unexpected. But if you’re willing to stick with us – at a show or through our music in general – it will pay off. It might take a while to get there, but we will drop a beat for you eventually. I love that we’ve been able to stick to the minimal side of things, and just let it breathe.”

- Jasper Willems

Bright Blue Vinyl + Digital (Limited Edition of 1500. True to its interstellar themes, Desiderata literally fell from the stars. Its name, derived from the Latin phrase de sidere (“from the stars”) bows to the fantastical and galaxy-wide compositions that comprise this ambitious new work. Directly inspired by the British sci-fi novel Neuromancer, the phrase refers to a street where one can go to get whatever they desire. For some artists, being caught in flux may result in songs that are either naive, out of touch or both, simply as a consequence of being cut off from human civilization. But for SUUNS, a band who have grown more than comfortable in the oblique and the intermediate, it actually had the opposite effect. The Breaks marks the Montreal experimental rock outfit’s most emotionally resonant and tonally rich collection of music to date.

The trio of Ben Shemie, Joseph Yarmush and Liam O’Neill leans more zealously than ever into their pop instincts. Yet remarkably enough, with that same dauntless abandon, SUUNS have mined a more extreme sonic palette this time around, one that stretches far beyond their core fundamentals as a band. “Before we had a kind of rule that we wouldn't have any instruments on the record that we weren't actually playing,” drummer/percussionist O'Neill says. “The recordings we made were always more of a document. There were no overdubs. And now…we don't care about that! Now we do whatever just sounds good.”

“The Breaks became sort of the opposite of our last record. Nothing was really played together. We were caught in a little bit of a wormhole, trying new things, throwing different things against the wall,” multi-instrumentalist Yarmush adds. Bands less experienced might have been forever trapped in said wormhole, but SUUNS’ mutual chemistry and trust turned out to be a reliable tether to explore these novel sonic ecosystems.

The Breaks finds Shemie, O’Neill and Yarmush gleefully experimenting with loops, synths, samples and MIDI instruments like a post-millennial Tangerine Dream messing with downtempo triphop beats. The album doesn’t capture a band looking to move in one specific direction: SUUNS simply aim to advance. The band took inspiration from the freedom of long, aimless drives where fully-formed thoughts manifest out of stillness, slowly surrendering to a quixotic wanderlust. On some moments, SUUNS sound like a tight-knit band 16 years into their restless creative journey. On other moments, the whole idea of being a band scatters asunder like a swarm of moths.

“Would you hold me baby/and free up my mind?” we catch Shemie singing mid-comedown on “Vanishing Point”. A flirtatious sax flourish lifts us skyward into a space-pop nirvana, dissolving into a lotus-eating swell of arpeggiated synths. “Fish On A String” revisits the serpentine grooves of The Witness, if only briefly. The song was actually written by Shemie during the band’s formative years – the epoch when their single “2020” became a hot pick for Hollywood blockbuster movie trailers. In those days, SUUNS would almost certainly have broken “Fish On A String” into taut walls of distortion and feedback.

But SUUNS in the year 2024 have become a more malleable, self-navigating operation. “I’m stuck in this glass bowl/but I believe that I’m free/Free to dream in colors/ colors I’ll never see,” Shemie sings, the acidic disenchantment in his voice gradually congealing into the hardened swagger of a Sergio Leone-protagonist. Like a beacon, an aura of synths casts a light on the song’s supple pulse, signaling a way out from SUUNS’ long-held sway with disarray and disillusionment. “Of all the SUUNS songs we’ve ever recorded, “Fish On A String” is by far the most confrontational and direct,” Shemie comments. “I feel I wouldn’t have been able to record this song in years past, because I wouldn’t have had the confidence to bring that kind of delivery.”

Likewise, The Breaks summons back some of the daredevil experimentations of 2018’s Felt, the band’s final album released under Secretly Canadian. During those days, the band still shared a rehearsal space together, which allowed them to quickly capture ideas in their rudimentary phase without being too precious about revisiting them. Now SUUNS’ dynamic is of course drastically different: founding member Max Henry left the band prior to The Witness, and Shemie has since moved to Paris, making SUUNS a more long-distance musical affair.

By fate and circumstance, O’ Neill took point in the producer’s chair for The Breaks, arranging, structuring and editing many of Shemie and Yarmush’s ideas from sporadic rehearsal sessions into Pro Tools, reimagining the songs over and over during a two-year time frame. “We were making this album at a time I just didn't really have a lot going on in my life other than music,” O’Neill says. “Sometimes we arrived at these moments of impasse and where we didn't know what to do. And I just found myself really getting into it. Let’s try this and this! And just try everything. I had a lot of energy, and I felt really passionate about it.”

One of O’Neill’s ‘babies’ is the sublime, piano-driven “Road Signs and Meanings”, which sounds like a deconstructed Bowie/Visconti-esque art pop opus. Shemie’s processed vocals hover above the arrangements like a spectral entity, drunk and dazed with pure euphoria. The hypnagogic “Rage”, despite its venereal synth-arpeggios and pitched-up vocals, is a deceptively simple pop song warped into something surreal.”Unlike our material in the past, the songs on The Breaks – and “Rage” in particular” – are pretty conventional. If you wanted to, you could just sit down at a piano and play the chords and sing them or play them on a guitar,” Shemie states.

One of The Breaks’ most spectacular moments arrives in the shape of “Overture”, which unfolds almost like a corrupted classical anthem. “We bummed a ride on dead end streets/And lost our way on the road to Mecca,” Shemie seethes, as the music smolders into sinister overdrive. Yarmush: “I pushed for that song to make it on the record. It’s so bonkers, like a little two-and-a-half-minute bomb. I think the vocals for me are what actually draws me the most to that song. I never heard that type of singing from Ben before. It just hit me in a way that I was like, ‘we have to put this on the record’.”

Forged between countless plane rides, road trips, van tours and text threads, The Breaks became a product of endurance and a lot of trial-and-error. It’s a record composed in tight fissions of freedom, where spells of whispered intimacy – like on the stunning ballad “Doreen” – are allowed to branch out into the vast glacial dreamscapes of the album’s majestic title track. It captures SUUNS at their most panoramic, curious and exuberant: a constant relay of being adrift and enlightened anew, geared up to eleven. And guess what: the wheels keep on spinning.
