We are purveyors of interesting media for a variety of artistically-honest, exploratory & often haphazard musicians. We're not your standard noise or experimental label; nor are we interested in typical indie rock. We do however love when these two sides of the spectrum intersect in interesting ways. And we gravitate towards artists who, in one way or another, bridge this gap between pop and noise.
Joyful Noise Recordings was founded by Karl Hofstetter as a freshman in college, when he made up a fake label name with the solitary goal of creating a false sense of legitimacy for his band’s CD. Since this “first release” in 2003 the label has grown a diverse roster including Kishi Bashi, WHY?, Sebadoh, Deerhoof, Oneida, Surfer Blood, Joan Of Arc, Big Business and many others. JNR has been on the forefront of innovative vinyl and physical product curation, including releases like a “12-sided record”, vinyl/CD hybrids, and playable etched records. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, JNR strives to navigate this volatile music industry with heart and purpose by working with adventurous musicians to facilitate important music.
