Amidst a sea of innovative artists at the 2025 Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN, the lure of a particularly legendary lineup summons a packed audience to this Pretentious Brewing Co. jam session. Eight disparate musicians gather to collectively invoke playful musical spirits. What follows is a chaos-jam truly living up to the name of the label presenting it. Everyone on stage euphorically engages with their array of instruments and effect pedals. For reasons unknown, Thor’s keyboard is gaffer-taped to a plastic children’s basketball hoop, and Greg has randomly placed a shoe on his snare. The little beer garden is bursting with spectators, even the perimeter fence is speckled with people who have climbed up from the other side to watch. Bright, swirling melodies launch rainbows into the overcast sky. In spite of the very name of the brewery, the atmosphere is delightfully carefree and sincerely unpretentious. At one point Shahzad springs up, and drapes socks and other material over Thor’s instruments in a cheeky attempt to obscure his ability to play. Kramer is keeping a glue-like bassline going while Hope chimes in with her otherworldly, spiritual cries. Macie’s violin sets the emotional tone, while Greg flails madly around in his “SUPER ME” crop top. Wendy effortlessly shreds with inspired distortion as Tall Tall Trees intensifies the wall of sound with his beautiful, effected banjo. The (joyful) noise continues until it doesn’t anymore. The band bows and collects itself on the side of the stage for a group photo. Their radiant smiles are contagious – as mirrored by the crowd. Sunshine, in front of the clouds.
