WLS - March 2020
- KRAMER, Curator

Today it's our pleasure to introduce you to our JNR lovechild: Kidbug.
Born from the junction of Eerie Wanda’s Marina Tadic and Dumb Numbers’ Adam Harding. Kidbug make self-described "cuddlebug sludge”, the harmoniously spiky offspring of Harding’s fuzzy guitar grunge-gaze and Tadic’s dreamy left field pop.
Kidbug’s roots stretch back to our now infamous label Holiday Party of 2018. Each year Joyful Noise invites all our artists into town to celebrate the holidays, and this particular year our Australian transplant Adam Harding was introduced to the Netherlands-based newbie to the roster, Marina Tadic. And, well, if love at first sight is a real thing, these two experienced it... These two incredibly special people from opposite sides of the planet instantly and simultaneously became both romantic partners and musical collaborators. Kidbug was formed.
Enlisting friends Thor Harris (Swans, Thor & Friends), Bobb Bruno (Best Coast), and Dale Crover (Melvins, duh), the group has emerged fully-formed with their self-titled debut. Fans of My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pixies, Pavement, Sonic Youth, or Stereolab will not be disappointed.
The debut self-titled album is out May 22, 2020. Available on "Loomer Pink" vinyl, CD, Digital, and special VIP edition vinyl (limited to 350 hand-numbered copies, pressed to Neon Violet & Neon Magenta A-side / B-side Swirl vinyl - includes bonus Flexi-Disc).

"The irony of doing a pristine box set of our complete studio albums is of course that nothing about the music was ever pristine or complete in the first place. Sometimes when feeling particularly pretentious, I call upon bonus-round vocabulary words like "wabi-sabi" to justify our rough, imperfect, incomplete style as some sort of aesthetic principle. Well, it sort of is and it sort of isn't. Reality has dictated since day one that we make our records on as little budget as possible, usually $0. That of course is not counting the cost to sanity that the months and sometimes years of labor that goes into making each of them that is exacted from our psyches. Thus has our economical style actually come about by accident.
And yet what fun it has always been to project our modest thingamabobs into the ears and hearts and minds of others, and discover that indeed how could they ever be but incomplete when those ears and hearts and minds are doing such magnificent work interpreting them. You complete our music. We have the best fans in the universe!"

Announcing the second LP from the enigmatic Magic Sword, Endless!
For the uninitiated, Magic Sword might seem like a conceptual quagmire. But we assure you, their universe (or, multiverse as they would say) is rich with lore and next-level artistry.
Comprised of three inter-dimensional / interplanetary beings–The Keeper (keyboards), The Seer (guitar) and The Weaver (drums)–Magic Sword encompasses graphic novels, soundtracks and live performances. Armed with a musical and visual aesthetic that has its roots unabashedly buried deep in the golden era of ‘70s and ‘80s fantasy and sci-fi, the trio have helped give rise to the emerging "retrowave" and "synthwave" movements.
Their second full-length album, Endless, is a 50 minute 11-song album of instrumental epics. Released on the heels of 2019's 30-minute EP Awakening, Endless chronicles the trio of Immortals as they lead the charge against evil in the ongoing Magic Sword multiverse. On March 27, the multiverse will align to bring the people of the land together for the birth of their album, followed by a tour of the realm searching for the greater good. Or so we're told.
The VIP Edition is limited to 400 hand-numbered copies on the badass Empress Blue & Black Galactic Swirl vinyl with Red splatter (pictured below), and comes with 10"x6" Comic Book.
Kicking things off for our guest-curated White Label Series this year is an album chosen by the one and only David Lynch!
Ariana Delawari is an Afghan American filmmaker, musician, and activist. Her album Lion of Panjshir (partly produced and initially released by Lynch on CD) was made in collaboration with several American bandmates and three Afghan elder master musicians.

At the end of each year we at the label gather as a community of workers, supporters, and artists, and celebrate at our Joyful Noise Holiday Party in our hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. We invite our artists and friends. We hang out, we record, and we drink.
But to be honest, 2019 was a cursed year. In a myriad of ways. And that hex even filtered down to our holiday party. This year most of our bands were on tour and/or in other countries on the date of the party... So the insane 10-band recording comp of years past was just not meant to be... However, instead of nixing the recording tradition, we JNR co-workers decided to turn lemons into lemonade and collaborate together on one single holiday song. As you might imagine, the JNR staff is full of musicians, and this provided the first opportunity for us to create a song together. It was one amazing team-building exercise.
We decided to cover The Ramones "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight)", led by our own Mark Dippel (who you might remember from the 2018 White Label Series). Plus a couple of our artists ended up contributing to the madness (Thor Harris, Sound of Ceres, Dumb Numbers), and this also marks the recording debut of 10-month-old Olive Hofstetter! It ended up being a magical session. And we wanted to share it with you.
This single is limited to just 100 copies on hand-made snowflake-shaped lathe-cut 7" records (or "Snowflathes") which is super sold out actually! We encourage you to purchase the digital with optional pay-as-you want with 100% of net proceed benefitting the Immigrant Welcome Center.
Peace and Love,
From all of us at Joyful Noise

Tall Tall Trees is songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and longtime Kishi Bashi collaborator / band member, Mike Savino.
Melding the influences of Pink Floyd and Cat Stevens with inspiration from banjo pioneers Earl Scruggs and Bela Fleck, 'A Wave of Golden Things' is Savino's fourth studio album and his most realized work to date. Abandoning the heavily-layered textures of 2017’s 'Freedays' for a more organic, stripped-down approach, 'A Wave of Golden Things' leaves Savino's distinct voice and song craft as the centerpiece of the album. Opting for an immersive experience, Savino self-recorded and self-produced this album - set up residence and a mobile recording rig on a hemp farm in the Appalachian mountains. Recorded in just under three weeks, with much of it arranged on the spot, the album maintains a sense of immediacy, celebrating raw performance over perfection.
Reflective of the dark and challenging times of today, Savino’s message is ultimately one of hope and finding peace of mind in the chatter of the modern world. The last chorus reaches towards a transcendent beauty in the darkness, and makes a promise: “a wave of golden things, it waits for you.”
Sorry You Couldn't Make It is the album Swamp has been trying to make his entire career. Following 2018’s highly acclaimed comeback album, Love, Loss, And Auto-Tune, Sorry You Couldn’t Make It allows Swamp to finally dive into the sound he grew up playing. While the 77 year-old's most enduring persona is of a psychedelic soul superhero—a musical vigilante upholding truths both personal and political since 1970’s immortal album Total Destruction To Your Mind—he will tell anybody who will listen that he’s considered himself country this entire time. “If you notice I use a lot of horns,” Swamp says. “But actually, if you listen to my records before I start stacking shit on it, I’m country. I sound country.”
These are narratives about love, of missing the one you love, of compassion, family and friends, and even the kind of love that transcends death. Sorry You Couldn’t Make It sees Swamp come full circle, and closes what has felt to him like unfinished business.
We are honored JNR and our partners at Pioneer Works are able to give this legend a platform to realize this vision... It's a truly magical album.

VIP exclusive version is limited to 400 hand-numbered copies on silver with black splatter vinyl. Comes with an exclusive Bonus big-hole 7" of 3 unreleased tracks.
